Carson
vs.
Banning
The
rivalry between Carson High and its neighbor, Banning High School (in
Wilmington), is legendary. The two schools dominated City Section
football during the 1970s and '80s, combining for 14 titles.
During this feud, the two teams have played
43 games against each other; the Carson Colts have won 24 of those games
and lost 19, outscoring Banning 933 points to 749. The Colts have
shut out Banning four times, and have been shut out by Banning only once.
(A
word from the loyal opposition: a
Carson citizen who went to Banning High School asked me to point
out that, in her opinion, “at half time
of the football games, no matter what the score on the board is, Banning's
Band always wins the battle of the bands and spirit”.)

Colts’ Coach Gene
Vollnogle
When Gene Vollnogle retired in 1990,
he was the winningest coach in the history
of California high school football.
In his 28 years of coaching, Coach Vollnogle’s
teams won 310 games out of 386 games played, for an
astounding 80% winning percentage.
His teams made the City Championship game 18 times; they finished first
or second in league play 84% of the time.
(Since his “retirement” Coach Vollnogle
has coached the Los Alamitos Junior Varsity to a 32-win/7-loss record (82%)
and has won three league championships.)
